Plants, animals and other people

UZUPIS ART INCUBATOR "Galera" (Uzupio street 2, Vilnius) will open doors to a world of plants, animals and other people on March 15, at 18 o'clock. This is the very first solo exhibition by Reda Tomingas (Animals in dresses).
In two of the gallery’s halls, the artist will be presenting more than 30 pieces of her latest work. Paintings and drawings in one and digitally created art in another.

Animals in dresses-is it animals with human heads or humans with beast heads?
Animals and plants take a very important position in my life and even more important than homo sapiens in my art.
Why? I am still looking for the answer. The diversity of shapes and colors in animal and plant worlds is far more plentiful than in the human one.
I can safely say I have read more books on animal behavior and plant care than human psychology.

Come and explore the faces and figures, colors and textures of animals and plants. And pick your favorite personality.

(Lithuanian)
Kovo 15 dieną, 18 valandą Užupio meno inkubatoriaus projektinė erdvė "Galera" (Užupio g. 2 Vilniuje) atvers duris į augalų, gyvūnų ir kitų žmonių pasaulį. Tai pirmoji Redos Tomingas (Animals in dresses) solo paroda.

"Beepositive" light festival in Vilnius

Last weekend was a bit crazy again. We came all the way to Vilnius to participate in the annual light festival "Beepositive". I created an atmospheric animation installation called "Blind princess searching". Key words are princess and dolphin, but the story behind the art project is far from cute or fun...
The installation was inspired by a story in a book called "Last chance to see" by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine.
A Chinese legend tells about a princess who drowned herself and a river dolphin became her reincarnation. The Yangtze river dolphin has gone extinct 10 years ago. I wonder where is the princess spirit now...
What kept haunting me was what has the creature's world become. The banji dolphin was birthing it's babies into a creaming, polluted, starving, deadly world until it eventually completely disappeared.
The making of the projection screen took most time I guess. Because I wanted the image to hover above the water. I didn't know how the location exactly looks, so it turned out a bit different then I planned. It was intended to be cut out, to lose the square and have only the shape of the princess. I think it would have the really spooky feeling. A woman floating in the reeds.

It was interesting to later sit in the tall grass and listen to what people had to say about the installation. The funny thing is lots of people saw a moose. Finally I saw it too. It gave me some new ideas.

I thought the frame will stand in 1,5 meter deep water. In the end it was only 50 cm. The screen was made of foam boards to make it sturdy and easy to cut. I guess I could have painted the unwanted areas too.
This video is from the night.

And now other massive and genius installations.
Polish massive and very simply done installation. The most simple things are always the best, aren't they?
Swinging lit wombs...I think...
I really liked this one. There were more installations I really liked, but I have no photos of some of them unfortunately.
Multiple D projection.
An idea for a new lamp? Very pretty.
There were gigantic colored lights projecting onto the trees. Reshaped the landscape completely. Very disorienting and beautiful.
Are we inside or outside?
My friends had a moon installation. Very quiet and still.
The party zone. I liked that area last year much more. With light in the pond and a fog machine.
I really loved how the gigantic ball was leaning against the sharp edged house. It felt as if it could pop any time.
A good idea, isn't it?
The trees were breathing heavily...
A shower curtain with an opera played to make you feel it's you singing.
Disco balls never look bad.

Hands and a gallery

OK, it's either orchids or my daughter's back I have been posting mostly. So, here are some tiny hands instead.
These photos are from last summer when we visited the contemporary art center. I love these kind of exhibitions. Where things leave an impression, make you feel in a certain way, or when art is interactive. There were huge antlers in the yard.
And above is my family watching an animation, featuring one of my favorite Lithuanian illustrators.
This piece of art had live pigeons inside. And it gave me the creeps. Somehow my brain connected this with the next to the last scene from the film "Hunger". Where pigeons flap their wings frantically  in the attic while a character played by Catherine Deneuve is aging thousands of years.
A little workshop in the center.
One of the best views of Vilnius.
Hanna and her pop up books. One is a doll house actually.
This one is a bit creepy, but she do not think so yet.
We glued a hundred or something pieces of silk paper. Just made a letter for dad.

She had her butterfly period, the pony period is still there, and now the dragons are the thing! My child is demanding  wings and to fly high.

Child and art

Hurry up, The sculptures by Mindaugas Navakas will be near the National art gallery only until the 14th of September.
I like these gigantic structures. And the one near the river, the so called "Pipe". It makes different people think more about the concept of art. Provokes discussion etc. And it is called "Krantinės arka", if you keep forgetting it.
Hanna  also appreciated the art.
It is so much fun to walk in the city with her now. She reacts with a loud "O!" to everything.

Earth art

One half of the Saturday was spent in the botanical gardens near Vilnius (Kairėnai). There was an opening of Land and Environmental Art exhibition "Identity".

This one here was smart. Reminded me of oil paint in the sink, full of water at painting classes.

Most of the artwork was fun. Sometimes one had to look for it. I regret I haven't taken a picture of two trees with their roots exposed.
The whole pond was surrounded by a huge braid, made of water plants. On the right-though the piece was interesting, the spongy thing on the tree was looked at much longer.
These balls here were bouncing in the wind as hell.
And guess the name of this one. Yeah: "And the hills have eyes"...

The one on the left was a bit disturbing. And on the right-"Tricolor". A Lithuanian flag comes to mind when one reads the name. We weren't mistaken.
There it is...

And a piece of art made by the nature itself.
